Post-Treatment Skincare: What to Do After a Facial

2 min read

The 24 to 48 hours after a professional treatment is when results either lock in or get undone. Your skin has just been cleansed, exfoliated, and stimulated — it's more receptive and more vulnerable at the same time. Here's the aftercare sequence estheticians send clients home with.

Keep the First Day Simple

Cleanse gently with a mild, non-foaming cleanser, morning and night, and pat dry instead of rubbing. No cleansing brushes, no washcloths, no scrubs. Less is genuinely more on day one.

Pause Your Active Ingredients

Retinol and retinoids, AHAs and BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, and vitamin C should come off the shelf for at least 48 hours after a standard facial — longer after a peel. Your treatment already accelerated cell turnover; stacking actives on top is how irritation starts.

Skip Heat and Sweat

Hold off on the gym, hot yoga, saunas, steam rooms, and very hot showers for 24 to 48 hours. Heat increases blood flow and can worsen redness, and sweat on freshly exfoliated skin can sting or introduce bacteria.

Protect With SPF 30 or Higher

Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage and post-treatment pigmentation. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily, seek shade, and be stricter than usual for the first few days after a peel

.

Moisturize Lightly — And Don't Pick

Use a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer as often as dryness or tightness calls for it, and skip heavy occlusives unless your provider recommended one. If flaking starts, let it shed on its own. Picking or pulling at loose skin is the fastest route to irritation and uneven pigmentation.

Not Every Treatment Has the Same Timeline

A hydrating or cleanse-and-extract facial is a 48-hour window. A chemical peel means several days of careful aftercare and no other facial treatments for a period set by your provider. Microneedling and laser treatments have stricter, longer rules. Always follow the specific instructions your esthetician gave you, not a generic checklist online.

Why AIM Students Learn Aftercare as a Core Skill

At AIM Beauty Academy's student clinic in Charlotte, NC, a service isn't finished when the treatment ends. Students train to explain aftercare clearly, in plain language, and to answer the questions clients actually have — because a client who follows aftercare gets better results and comes back. That client-communication training runs alongside the technical curriculum in the Esthetics Program.
